Archer Aviation’s all-electric Midnight aircraft completed each leg of a round-trip demonstration flight between Salinas Municipal Airport and Monterey Regional Airport in approximately nine minutes. The piloted test took place on July 30 in close coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration. Archer compares that result with the 35 minutes or more typically required to cover the same route by car.

The company did not disclose the aircraft’s average speed, energy consumption or charging requirements for this specific flight. Those figures would provide a more complete picture of the test, but the result still demonstrates the type of short regional journey Archer intends Midnight to perform.
Midnight combines vertical takeoff and landing with wing-borne forward flight. The configuration aims to offer the flexibility of a helicopter while improving efficiency during short trips. Archer designed the aircraft to carry four passengers plus a pilot, with a targeted maximum range of 100 miles and a top speed of 150 mph. It is primarily optimized for repeated flights of approximately 20 miles, with around 10 minutes of charging between trips.
Stellantis plays both a financial and industrial role in the program. The automaker has supported Archer since 2020 and contributes manufacturing expertise, personnel, capital and supply-chain knowledge. Archer completed its high-volume production facility in Covington, Georgia, where the partners aim to increase output to as many as 650 Midnight aircraft annually by 2030. Stellantis has committed to covering certain manufacturing labor and capital costs as production expands.
The time saved between Salinas and Monterey reflects the use case behind Archer’s commercial strategy: replacing congested short-distance road journeys with direct electric flights. However, a single demonstration does not establish whether regular passenger service will be commercially sustainable. Flight frequency, charging time, operating expenses, ticket prices and airport integration will determine whether the aircraft offers a practical advantage over ground transportation.
Archer expects initial US operations to begin during the second half of 2026 under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Partners in Florida, Texas and New York have been selected to participate, allowing the company to begin developing procedures and infrastructure for early operations.
Midnight is also expected to serve as the official air taxi of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. That program will require significantly greater operational and regulatory maturity than the current demonstration flights.
Infrastructure remains another major challenge. Archer, BETA Technologies and Macquarie Capital recently announced plans to bring interoperable electric-aircraft charging to more than 250 US aviation sites by 2030.
The real test will therefore be whether Archer can repeat those nine-minute journeys safely and consistently within a certified passenger network rather than during a single demonstration.
