Volkswagen has a problem. Not a philosophical one. but a very concrete one: up to 75,323 units of the Jetta sedan and Taos crossover sold in the United States may be driving around with a digital instrument cluster that simply decides to go dark. No warning lights. No indicators. Just a clean, minimalist, completely useless black screen.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration didn’t find this particularly charming, and classified the condition as a formal non-compliance. Volkswagen Group of America traced the root cause to a software error in the 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a unit, incidentally, supplied by Volkswagen de Mexico. A Mexican-built component inside an American-market car, assembled in Puebla, is now the star of a recall that also sweeps up an additional 8,040 vehicles in Canada.

The timeline here deserves a closer look. Volkswagen opened an internal investigation back in October 2024, after warranty claims about cluster malfunctions at startup started piling up. For reasons the company has not felt compelled to explain in detail, the matter sat quietly on someone’s desk until February 5, 2026, when it was finally presented to the Pre-Production Safety Committee. Non-compliance was officially confirmed eleven days later.

The fix is a software update, deployable only via a specialized Volkswagen diagnostic tool through the OBD-II port. If the update isn’t enough, dealers will replace the entire instrument cluster. As this is a formal recall, everything is free of charge.

Production-wise, Volkswagen quietly resolved the underlying issue during the 33rd production week of 2025. All affected vehicles are 2025 model year units: Jettas built in Puebla between September 23, 2024 and July 1, 2025, and Taos models produced between November 6, 2024 and June 20, 2025. Dealers were notified on March 27, 2026. Owners will receive notification letters by May 22, 2026.
