More uncertainty at Cassino plant

The Stellantis Cassino plant faces a period of deep uncertainty, with an alarming balance of only 61 working days in 2025. This drastic reduction in activity, which includes more than 50 days of downtime, is mainly due to a shortage of orders for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio models. Recently, a further production stop was imposed until July 11.

The current situation traces, and in some ways worsens, that of 2024, when the plant experienced 50 days of stoppage in the second half of the year. In the meantime, to manage the overabundance of staff, incentive layoffs have been initiated, the result of an agreement signed on June 11 between Stellantis and labor organizations.

Expectations of revitalization related to the introduction of the new generations of Stelvio and Giulia have been dashed, with the launch of the new models now postponed to 2027, and even to 2028 in the case of the SUV. This postponement raises serious questions about the long-term future of the Cassino plant and employment prospects for the coming years.

Situation similar to last year

As anticipated, the situation for the Stellantis plant in Cassino in 2025 promises to be similar to that experienced in 2024, with a mix of uncertainties and potential positive developments. The focus is on the possible visit of Antonio Filosa, the newly appointed CEO of Alfa Romeo, in late July and early August. This event is seen as a crucial opportunity to obtain concrete reassurances about the fate of the factory.

The long-term prospects for Cassino are inextricably linked to the arrival of the new generations of Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia models. However, the period leading up to their launch promises to be extremely complex. The difficult years are exacerbated by the shortage of orders for the other vehicle currently produced at the ciociara factory: the Maserati Grecale. This scenario makes the need for clarity and a defined plan for maintaining production and employment levels all the more urgent.

Incentivized redundancies are underway at the Stellantis plant in Cassino, an initiative that follows the agreement signed on June 11 between the company and the unions, with the sole exception of Fiom. Despite an estimated 600 redundancies, there will be 250 voluntary incentivized exits.

Stellantis’ offer has already attracted considerable interest: on the first day alone, 60 employees accepted the proposal and left the factory. Workers over the age of 55 are eligible for an incentive of 33 months’ pay and a bonus of 30,000 euros.

The terms of the incentives are modulated according to the age of the worker:

For the 50-54 age group, 30 monthly payments are provided.

Between ages 45 and 49, the incentive is reduced to 24 monthly payments.

For employees aged 40 to 44, the offer is 18 monthly payments, with a bonus reduced to 20,000 euros.

Younger workers, aged between 35 and 39, will receive 12 monthly payments in addition to a bonus of 20,000 euros.

Importantly, over the past four years, the Cassino plant has seen a reduction of about 2,200 in its workforce.
